Declutter Before Moving: Purge Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect time to decide what deserves space in your new home—and what doesn’t.

Don’t spend time packing things you no longer want. Don’t use valuable space in the moving truck for them. And definitely don’t carry them into your new home just to deal with them later.

Before filling your Alabama Moving Bins, go through your home one room at a time and sort your belongings into four categories:

Start Decluttering Early

The best time to declutter is before the serious packing begins. Starting a few weeks ahead gives you time to make thoughtful decisions instead of throwing everything into bins at the last minute.

Work through one manageable area at a time—a closet, cabinet, drawer or corner of the garage. You don’t have to tackle the entire house in one day.

Keep What Belongs in Your Next Home

Keep the items you regularly use, truly value or know will work in your new space.

If you haven’t used something in years, forgot you owned it or wouldn’t buy it again today, it may not be worth packing. Be especially selective with clothing that no longer fits, duplicate kitchen items, outdated electronics and furniture that won’t work in the new home.

Sell Items With Value

Furniture, appliances, tools, electronics and name-brand clothing may be worth selling before the move.

Facebook Marketplace makes it easy to list items locally and arrange pickup. Price items fairly, use clear photos and mention that buyers must collect them by a specific date.

For safety, avoid sharing unnecessary personal information and arrange pickups during daylight hours when possible.

Donate Useful Items

Gently used clothing, furniture and household goods can help local families and organizations. Local Buy Nothing groups are also useful for giving items directly to people nearby—often with porch pickup.

Schedule donation pickups early because appointment availability and accepted items can vary. Only donate things that are clean, working and still useful. If an item belongs in the trash, don’t turn it into someone else’s problem.

Several Birmingham-area charities will collect donations from your home. See our guide to free donation pickup services in Birmingham.

Toss or Recycle What’s Left

Discard broken, damaged or unusable items responsibly. Check local guidelines before disposing of paint, chemicals, batteries, electronics or other materials that may require special handling.

Shred paperwork containing personal or financial information instead of placing it directly in the trash.

Estimate Your Moving Needs After You Purge

Once you’ve finished decluttering, you’ll have a much clearer idea of how much you’re actually moving. That makes it easier to choose the right moving-bin package and avoid paying to transport clutter.

You may be surprised by how much less there is to pack. Our bin estimator will recommend a package size in about thirty seconds.

Pack Less. Move Smarter.
